Toward a Bright Future: Recommendations
for Addressing Skills Shortages in Western Canada
The Canada West Foundation has released Toward
a Bright Future: Recommendations for Addressing Skills Shortages
in Western Canada, the third and final report in the Post-Secondary
Education component of the Human Capital Initiative. The Human
Capital Initiative is, itself, part of Canada West’s
Building the New West Project.
Chief Economist Todd Hirsch, the report’s
author, warns that, with increased activity in key economic
sectors, projected skills shortages could hinder growth, send
companies and individuals elsewhere looking for opportunities,
and change our way of life.
Hirsch makes 10 recommendations, including
more on the job training, expanding Aboriginal involvement
in the workforce, and increasing awareness among young people
of opportunities in the trades, to alleviate the skills shortage.
“Shortages of skilled labour,” he
said, “are having a serious impact on some sectors and
in some regions in the West,” Hirsch said. “It’s
critical that government, post-secondary education, and industry
work cooperatively to address these shortages. There is no
silver bullet but there are some practical, concrete actions
that could help alleviate the shortages.”
