Career Practitioners Conference: May 7, 2004 - Wanuskewin Heritage Park

The Career Practitioners Conference was held May 7, 2004 at Wanuskewin Heritage Park. In attendance were 105 individuals, including 71 participants, 28 presenters, and 6 members of the organizing committee.

The day began with opening remarks and the keynote address by Phil Jarvis, Vice President of the National Life/Work Centre in Ottawa. Phil is a leading proponent of the “career management paradigm shift.” He speaks eloquently and passionately to the personal, social and economic costs of continuing to adhere to an out-of-date vocational guidance mindset. Phil is the co-author and national coordinator of the Blueprint for Life/Work Designs, Canada’s new national career management competency framework.

Phil’s presentation entitled Career Self-Management Skills: Keys to Individual and Community Prosperity focused on the fact that the days when a career professional could match a person with an occupation, map out the path and then let things unfold in a predictable manner are gone. Consequently, much current career decision-making is unintentional, and therefore, most adults feel they’re in the wrong job. The consequences, both economic and human, are unacceptable. However, the competencies people need to become intentional career managers have been identified and can be taught, but experiential learning resources are needed.

Phil’s entire presentation can be found below:

The day continued with volunteer presentations arranged in three one-hour sessions, allowing participants to choose those of interest to them:

Jean-Philippe Tabet from the Canadian Career Information Partnership attended the Conference and offered some closing remarks for the day. The CCIP strives to work towards a future in which individual communities and institutions in Canada have the foundation of a career development culture to support them in being self-reliant in achieving their goals. They provide a national forum for career development leadership partners from provincial-territorial-federal jurisdictions to foster a career development culture that integrates occupational labour market and learning information. Currently Jean-Philippe Tabet is working with the SLMC and the Industry Education Council to create a local Career Practitioners Association.

The first Career Practitioners Conference has been hailed a success and considerations for next year’s event are underway.
